3D Acrylic Letters vs Stainless Steel — Choosing Your Shop Front Sign
3D letters are the most impactful shop front sign you can install. But should you choose acrylic or stainless steel? This guide covers the differences in cost, appearance, durability, and which suits your business.
3D Acrylic Letters vs Stainless Steel — Choosing Your Shop Front Sign
3D letters are the gold standard for shop front signage in Dubai. They create depth, shadow, and a premium appearance that flat printed signs simply cannot match. Walk through any major retail area in Dubai — Mall of the Emirates, City Walk, JBR, or Business Bay — and the majority of high-end shop fronts use 3D letters.
The two most popular materials are cast acrylic and stainless steel. Both look excellent. Both last well in Dubai's climate. But they are very different in cost, appearance, lighting options, and the type of brand they suit best.
3D Acrylic Letters
What They Are
3D acrylic letters are cut from cast acrylic sheet (typically 10–25mm thick) using CNC routing or laser cutting, then finished and mounted to the wall or a backing panel. They can be painted in any colour, left in their natural acrylic colour, or — most commonly — used with an illuminated face.
Appearance
Acrylic letters have a clean, modern appearance. The material has a slight sheen that catches light well. When illuminated from within (using LED modules inside the letter), the face glows evenly — a look that is extremely effective at night and in low-light conditions.
Acrylic letters can be produced in virtually any colour. The face can be opaque (painted) for a solid colour, or translucent for illumination. The sides (returns) are typically painted in a contrasting or matching colour.
Lighting Options
This is where acrylic letters have a significant advantage over stainless steel:
Face-illuminated letters — LED modules inside the letter illuminate through a translucent acrylic face. The letter glows from within. This is the most common illuminated letter type in Dubai retail.
Halo-lit (reverse-lit) acrylic — LEDs inside the letter shine backwards, creating a glow on the wall behind the letter. This works with both acrylic and stainless steel but is more commonly used with acrylic due to cost.
Non-illuminated — Acrylic letters can also be used without illumination, relying on their colour and depth for visual impact.
Durability in Dubai
Cast acrylic is UV-stable and performs well in Dubai's climate. It does not rust or corrode. The main vulnerabilities are:
- Thermal expansion — Acrylic expands significantly in heat. Letters must be mounted with expansion-tolerant fixings, or they will crack or bow in summer.
- Impact resistance — Acrylic is harder than most plastics but can crack under sharp impact. Not ideal for ground-level signs in high-traffic areas.
- Colour fading — Cast acrylic with UV-stable paint holds colour well, but cheaper paints will fade. Always specify UV-stable finishes for outdoor Dubai use.
Cost
3D acrylic letters are the more affordable option. For a typical shop front sign with 6–8 letters at 300–400mm height:
- Non-illuminated acrylic letters: AED 800 – 2,000
- Face-illuminated acrylic letters: AED 1,500 – 4,000
- Halo-lit acrylic letters: AED 2,000 – 5,000
Prices vary significantly based on letter size, font complexity, and finish.
Stainless Steel 3D Letters
What They Are
Stainless steel letters are fabricated from sheet steel (typically 1.5–3mm thick) that is laser-cut to shape, then folded and welded to create a 3D letter form. The face and returns are stainless steel, finished in brushed, mirror-polished, or satin.
For outdoor Dubai applications, Grade 316 stainless steel is the correct specification — it contains molybdenum which gives it superior resistance to the chloride corrosion that affects coastal environments.
Appearance
Stainless steel letters have an unmistakably premium appearance. The brushed or mirror finish catches light in a way that acrylic cannot replicate. They communicate quality, permanence, and luxury.
Mirror-polished stainless steel is particularly striking — the letters reflect their surroundings, creating a dynamic appearance that changes with the light. Brushed stainless has a more understated, professional look.
Stainless steel letters are the standard choice for:
- Hotels and hospitality
- Luxury retail
- High-end restaurants
- Financial services and professional firms
- Corporate headquarters and building identification
Lighting Options
Stainless steel letters are most commonly used with halo (reverse) lighting — LEDs inside the letter shine backwards onto the wall, creating a glow around each letter. This is one of the most premium-looking sign effects available and is widely used in Dubai's luxury hospitality sector.
Face illumination is less common with stainless steel (the face is opaque metal, not translucent acrylic), but can be achieved with a cut-out acrylic face insert.
Durability in Dubai
Grade 316 stainless steel is extremely durable in Dubai's climate:
- Corrosion-resistant — 316 grade resists the humidity and salt air found in coastal Dubai locations
- UV-resistant — Metal does not fade or degrade under UV
- Impact-resistant — Significantly more robust than acrylic
- Thermally stable — Expands less than acrylic under heat, though fixings still need to accommodate some movement
The main risk with stainless steel in Dubai is using the wrong grade. Grade 304 (the more common and cheaper grade) will show rust staining within 1–2 years in coastal or high-humidity locations. Always insist on 316 for outdoor Dubai applications.
Cost
Stainless steel letters cost significantly more than acrylic — typically 3–5x more for equivalent size and coverage:
- Brushed stainless steel letters (non-lit): AED 2,500 – 6,000
- Mirror-polished stainless steel letters (non-lit): AED 3,500 – 8,000
- Halo-lit stainless steel letters: AED 4,000 – 12,000+
The higher cost reflects the material cost of 316 stainless steel and the more complex fabrication process.
Side-by-Side Comparison

| UV resistance | Good (cast acrylic) | Excellent |
| Impact resistance | Moderate | High |
| Colour options | Any colour | Silver/gold tones (or painted) |
| Best for | Retail, F&B, SME, colourful brands | Luxury, hospitality, corporate |
| Maintenance | Low | Very low |
Which Should You Choose?
Choose 3D acrylic letters if:
- Your brand uses specific colours that need to be matched exactly
- You want face illumination (glowing letters at night)
- Budget is a significant consideration
- You are in retail, food and beverage, or a consumer-facing business
- You want a modern, vibrant look
Choose stainless steel letters if:
- Your brand is premium, luxury, or corporate
- You want a sign that communicates permanence and quality
- You are in hospitality, professional services, or luxury retail
- You want halo lighting for a dramatic night-time effect
- Long-term durability is the priority over initial cost
Consider a combination: Many of our clients use stainless steel for the main brand name and acrylic for secondary text or taglines — getting the premium look of stainless steel at a lower overall cost.
