Acrylic Sign Boards in Dubai: The Complete Shopfront Guide
Acrylic sign boards are the most popular shopfront signage choice in Dubai. This guide covers types, costs, finishes, and what to specify for UAE conditions.
Acrylic is the backbone of Dubai's shopfront signage industry. Walk down any retail strip in JLT, Business Bay, or Al Quoz and the majority of the sign boards you see — the illuminated boxes, the 3D letters, the fascia panels — are built on acrylic.
It is popular for good reason. Acrylic is lightweight, weather-resistant, takes colour and print exceptionally well, and can be fabricated into almost any shape. In Dubai's climate, it outperforms wood and many metals for outdoor applications.
This guide covers everything you need to know before specifying acrylic signage for your shopfront.
Types of Acrylic Sign Boards
1. Acrylic Sign Box (Light Box)
The most common shopfront sign in Dubai. A fabricated box — typically 80–150mm deep — with an acrylic face printed or vinyl-applied with your brand graphics, illuminated from inside with LED strips.
Best for: Retail shops, restaurants, service businesses, salons
Typical size: 600mm–3,000mm wide
Illumination: LED backlit (standard), edge-lit (premium)
Cost range: AED 1,500–AED 12,000 depending on size
2. 3D Acrylic Letters
Individual letters and logos cut from solid acrylic sheet (typically 10–25mm thick), mounted directly to the wall or fascia with standoffs for a dimensional effect. Can be illuminated with LED edge-lighting or left non-illuminated.
Best for: Corporate offices, premium retail, hotel lobbies
Typical letter height: 100mm–600mm
Cost range: AED 150–AED 500 per letter (non-illuminated); AED 300–AED 800 per letter (illuminated)
3. Acrylic Fascia Panel
A flat acrylic sheet mounted flush to the shopfront fascia, with vinyl graphics or direct UV print applied to the surface. Simpler and lower-cost than a sign box, but less visible at night without supplementary lighting.
Best for: Budget shopfronts, temporary signage, secondary signs
Cost range: AED 600–AED 3,500
4. Acrylic + ACP Composite Signs
Acrylic elements combined with Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) backing — the most common construction for large shopfront fascias. The ACP provides structural rigidity and weather resistance; the acrylic provides the visual face.
Best for: Large shopfronts, multi-tenant buildings, retail parks
Cost range: AED 3,000–AED 25,000+
Acrylic Grades for Dubai Conditions
Not all acrylic is equal. Dubai's combination of intense UV radiation, heat (summer ambient temperatures regularly exceed 45°C), and occasional sandstorms means material specification matters.
Cast acrylic — the premium choice. Manufactured by pouring liquid acrylic into moulds, cast acrylic has superior UV resistance, better colour stability, and higher heat tolerance than extruded acrylic. Specify cast acrylic for any outdoor sign that needs to last 5+ years.
Extruded acrylic — lower cost, acceptable for indoor signs and short-term outdoor applications. Tends to yellow and become brittle faster under UAE UV exposure.
Opal/white diffuser acrylic — used as the face of illuminated sign boxes. The opal finish diffuses the LED light evenly, eliminating hot spots. Specify 3mm opal for standard boxes; 5mm for large-format signs.
Coloured acrylic — available in hundreds of standard colours. For brand-matched colours, specify RAL or Pantone and use vinyl or UV print over clear acrylic rather than relying on coloured sheet stock.
Illumination Options
LED Backlit (Standard)
LED strips mounted inside the sign box illuminate the acrylic face from behind. Cost-effective, energy-efficient, and the most common choice for Dubai shopfronts.
Halo-Lit (Reverse-Lit)
LEDs mounted behind solid letters or a solid panel create a glow around the edges rather than through the face. Creates a premium, upscale look popular in DIFC and Downtown Dubai.
Edge-Lit
LEDs mounted along the edge of a clear acrylic panel illuminate the entire sheet through internal reflection. Creates a clean, modern look for flat panel signs.
Non-Illuminated
For indoor signs, secondary signs, or locations where external lighting is sufficient. Lower cost and simpler installation.
What to Specify for UAE Conditions
When briefing your signage supplier, always specify:
- Cast acrylic (not extruded) for any outdoor application
- UV-stable inks for any printed elements
- Powder-coated aluminium or stainless steel for any metal framework (not painted mild steel, which rusts)
- IP65-rated LED drivers for illuminated signs (dust and moisture protection)
- Stainless steel fixings — not zinc or galvanised, which corrode in UAE humidity
Dubai Municipality Permit Requirements
All external shopfront signs in Dubai require a Dubai Municipality (DM) signage permit before installation. The permit process involves:
- Submitting sign drawings and specifications to DM
- Approval from the building owner/landlord
- DM inspection after installation
Sign Design Dubai handles the full permit application as part of our service. Typical permit processing time is 1–3 weeks.
Typical Project Timeline
| Stage | Duration |
|---|---|
| Design and client approval | 2–5 days |
| DM permit application | 7–21 days |
| Fabrication | 3–7 days |
| Installation | 1–2 days |
| Total (with permit) | 2–5 weeks |
For urgent projects without permit requirements (indoor signs, temporary signage), we can deliver fabrication and installation within 48–72 hours.
