Exhibition Stand Design and Fabrication in Dubai: What You Need to Know
Dubai hosts some of the world\'s largest trade shows — GITEX, Gulfood, INDEX, Arab Health. This guide covers exhibition stand types, costs, and how to brief your fabricator for a standout result.
Dubai is one of the world's premier trade show destinations. GITEX Technology Week, Gulfood, INDEX, Arab Health, Cityscape, The Big 5 — the calendar of major exhibitions at Dubai World Trade Centre and Expo City draws exhibitors from across the globe.
For businesses exhibiting in Dubai, the exhibition stand is the most visible brand investment of the year. A well-designed stand attracts visitors, communicates your brand, and generates leads. A poorly designed stand — or one that looks cheap relative to your competitors — can actively damage your brand.
This guide covers the key decisions you need to make when planning your exhibition stand in Dubai.
Exhibition Stand Types
Shell Scheme
The basic option provided by most exhibition organisers. A pre-built framework of aluminium extrusions and white infill panels, with a standard fascia sign showing your company name.
Shell scheme is the starting point, not the destination. Most serious exhibitors upgrade or customise their shell scheme, or move to a custom stand entirely.
Best for: First-time exhibitors, small budgets, secondary shows
Cost: Typically included in the exhibition package (space only); graphics and upgrades additional
Modular Stand
A reusable system of branded panels, frames, and graphics that can be configured in different layouts for different shows. More professional than shell scheme, more cost-effective than custom for repeat exhibitors.
Best for: Companies exhibiting at 3+ shows per year
Cost: AED 8,000–AED 35,000 for the system; lower cost per show over time
Custom-Built Stand
A bespoke stand designed and built specifically for your brand and exhibition space. No limitations on design — curved walls, double-deck structures, integrated AV, custom lighting, branded flooring, meeting rooms.
Best for: Major shows (GITEX, Gulfood, Arab Health), large budgets, premium brand positioning
Cost: AED 25,000–AED 250,000+ depending on size and complexity
Pop-Up Display
Lightweight, portable display systems — fabric tension frames, pop-up banner walls, retractable banners. Quick to set up and transport. Limited visual impact compared to modular or custom stands.
Best for: Small spaces (3×3m), satellite events, roadshows
Cost: AED 1,500–AED 8,000
Key Design Decisions
1. Traffic Flow
How do visitors move through your stand? The best stands are open and inviting — no barriers at the entrance, clear sightlines to key products or displays, natural flow from entry to engagement to exit.
2. Brand Hierarchy
What is the single most important thing a passing visitor should take away? Your company name? A product? A key message? Design the stand around that hierarchy — the dominant element should be visible from 10 metres away.
3. Meeting Space
For B2B exhibitors, a semi-private meeting area is essential. It does not need to be large — a table and four chairs behind a partial wall is sufficient. But having a dedicated space for conversations dramatically improves lead quality.
4. Storage
Every stand needs storage for brochures, giveaways, personal items, and equipment. Build it into the design — visible clutter undermines even the best-designed stand.
5. Lighting
Exhibition hall lighting is typically flat and unflattering. Supplementary lighting — spotlights on products, backlit graphics, LED strips on structural elements — transforms the visual impact of a stand.
Dubai Exhibition Venues and Requirements
Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC)
The primary venue for most major Dubai exhibitions. DWTC has specific requirements for stand construction — height limits, fire safety, electrical specifications, and rigging restrictions. All stands must be approved by the venue before construction begins.
Expo City Dubai
Newer venue, used for large-scale events. Similar approval requirements to DWTC.
Key requirements for both venues:
- Stand design drawings must be submitted for approval (typically 4–6 weeks before the show)
- All materials must meet fire safety standards
- Electrical work must be carried out by approved contractors
- Double-deck stands require structural engineering sign-off
Sign Design Dubai manages the full approval process for all Dubai venues.
