Dubai's events calendar is relentless. Government summits, corporate conferences, product launches, sporting events, Ramadan activations, National Day celebrations — there is barely a week in the year when someone in Dubai is not printing banners at speed.

Outdoor banner printing is one of the most time-sensitive categories in the print industry. The event date does not move. The banner has to be ready. Here is what you need to know to get it right every time.

The material you choose determines how the banner performs in Dubai's outdoor conditions — and how long it lasts.

The most common material for outdoor banners. A woven polyester mesh coated in PVC, available in different weights (gsm):

• 280–340 gsm: Standard weight. Suitable for short-term outdoor use (days to a few weeks). Used for event banners, promotional displays, and temporary installations.
• 440–510 gsm: Heavy-duty. Suitable for longer-term outdoor use (months). More resistant to wind, UV, and rain. Used for construction hoarding graphics, semi-permanent outdoor displays.

Finish options: Gloss (vivid colours, high contrast), satin (reduced glare, better for photography), matt (premium appearance, minimal reflection).

PVC vinyl with small perforations across the surface. Wind passes through the holes rather than loading the banner face, which dramatically reduces the risk of the banner tearing or pulling fixings out in strong winds.

Essential for any large banner in an exposed location — rooftops, building facades, scaffolding, or anywhere the shamal wind can get behind it. The perforations reduce print density slightly (typically 50–60% coverage), so colours appear slightly less saturated than solid vinyl.

Printed polyester fabric is increasingly used for event backdrops, stage banners, and indoor/sheltered outdoor applications. It looks more premium than vinyl, packs flat without creasing, and can be washed and reused.

Tension frame fabric: Printed on stretch polyester, fitted to an aluminium tension frame. The result looks like a seamless graphic panel — no wrinkles, no visible fixings. The standard for corporate event backdrops and exhibition displays.

Blockout fabric: Opaque polyester that prevents light bleed-through. Used for banners where backlighting would be a problem.

A loosely woven mesh fabric used for very large outdoor banners (building wraps, scaffolding banners). The open weave allows significant wind pass-through, making it suitable for very large installations where solid vinyl would be structurally unsafe.

There are no universal standard sizes — banners are typically made to the dimensions you specify. However, common sizes for Dubai events include:

For large events with multiple banners, standardising on a small number of sizes reduces cost and simplifies installation.

How a banner is finished determines how it is installed and how long it lasts.

Hemmed edges: The banner edge is folded over and welded or sewn to create a reinforced border. Essential for any banner that will be under tension. Without hemming, the edge tears.

Eyelets (grommets): Metal rings punched through the hem at regular intervals (typically every 500mm). Ropes, bungee cords, or cable ties pass through eyelets to fix the banner to a frame, fence, or structure.

Pole pockets: A sleeve sewn along the top and/or bottom edge, through which a pole is inserted. Used for hanging banners and pull-up displays. Cleaner appearance than eyelets for premium applications.

Velcro strips: Used for tension frame fabric and some indoor applications. The fabric attaches to the frame via hook-and-loop strips around the perimeter.

Reinforced corners: Additional material welded at corners, which are the highest-stress points on any banner under wind load.

Rush jobs are available but carry a premium. For events with fixed dates, brief your printer at least 5–7 working days in advance to avoid rush charges and allow time for a proof review.

Wind loading: Dubai's shamal winds can be severe, particularly in summer. Any banner in an exposed outdoor location should use mesh vinyl or have wind slits cut into solid vinyl panels. Undersized fixings and non-hemmed edges are the most common causes of banner failure in Dubai.

UV and heat: Banners in direct sun in Dubai summer will fade faster than the same banner in a temperate climate. For any banner intended to last more than 4–6 weeks outdoors, specify UV-resistant inks and a UV overlaminate.

Permit requirements: Large outdoor banners on public-facing locations (building facades, street-facing hoardings) may require a temporary permit from Dubai Municipality or the relevant free zone authority. Check before installation — an unpermitted banner can be removed by inspectors.

Ramadan and National Day: These are the two highest-demand periods for banner printing in Dubai. Lead times extend significantly in the weeks before each. If your event or activation coincides with either, brief your printer 2–3 weeks earlier than you normally would.
