UV and Large-Format Digital Printing in Dubai: Services, Materials, and Applications
UV and large-format digital printing are the engines behind Dubai\'s signage and branding industry. This guide covers what each technology does, what it\'s best for, and how to specify print jobs for UAE conditions.
Digital printing technology has transformed the signage and branding industry. What once required expensive screen printing setups and large minimum orders can now be produced in small quantities, in full colour, with photographic quality, in a matter of hours.
Sign Design Dubai operates large-format and UV flatbed printing equipment at our in-house factory in Dubai Investment Park (DIP 2). This guide covers the two main digital printing technologies we use, what each is best suited for, and how to specify print jobs for UAE conditions.
Large-Format Roll-to-Roll Printing
Large-format roll-to-roll printers print onto flexible media — vinyl, fabric, banner material, and paper — fed from a roll. The print head moves across the media, depositing ink in precise patterns.
What It Prints On
- Vinyl — the most common substrate. Used for vehicle wraps, wall graphics, window graphics, floor graphics, and outdoor banners
- Fabric — for exhibition displays, tension fabric systems, flags, and soft signage
- Banner material — PVC banner for outdoor advertising, events, and construction hoarding
- Paper — for indoor posters, point-of-sale displays, and short-term graphics
Ink Types
Solvent inks — the standard for outdoor vinyl printing. Solvent inks bond chemically with the vinyl substrate, producing durable, weather-resistant prints. Suitable for outdoor applications in Dubai's UV-intense environment.
Eco-solvent inks — lower VOC than standard solvent inks. Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. The most common ink type for general signage printing.
Latex inks — water-based inks that produce durable, odourless prints. Suitable for indoor applications and environments where solvent odour is a concern (offices, retail, healthcare).
Dye-sublimation inks — used for fabric printing. The ink is transferred to the fabric under heat, producing vibrant, wash-resistant colours. Used for exhibition displays, flags, and soft signage.
Resolution and Quality
Large-format printing resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). For signage applications:
- Outdoor banners and hoarding (viewed from 3m+): 72–100 dpi at final size
- Vehicle wraps and wall graphics (viewed from 1–3m): 100–150 dpi at final size
- Indoor graphics (viewed from under 1m): 150–300 dpi at final size
Higher resolution is not always better — for large-format prints viewed from a distance, high resolution adds cost without improving perceived quality.
UV Flatbed Printing
UV flatbed printers print directly onto rigid substrates — the material is placed flat on the printer bed and the print head passes over it, depositing UV-curable ink that is instantly cured by UV lamps.
What It Prints On
UV flatbed printing can print on almost any flat, rigid surface:
- Acrylic — for sign boxes, display stands, and decorative panels
- ACP (Aluminium Composite Panel) — for fascia signs, hoarding panels, and wayfinding signs
- Aluminium — for road safety signs, industrial labels, and nameplates
- Wood and MDF — for interior signs, display fixtures, and decorative elements
- Glass — for decorative panels, partitions, and display cases
- PVC foam — for lightweight display and exhibition elements
- Ceramic and tile — for decorative applications
Advantages of UV Flatbed Printing
No substrate preparation — UV ink adheres directly to most surfaces without primer or coating
Instant cure — UV lamps cure the ink immediately, so prints are dry and ready to handle as soon as they come off the printer
Excellent durability — UV-cured inks are highly resistant to UV, abrasion, and chemicals
White ink capability — UV flatbed printers can print white ink, enabling printing on dark or transparent substrates
Varnish and texture — UV printers can apply clear varnish layers for gloss/matt effects, or build up textured surfaces (raised print)
UV DTF (Direct to Film)
UV DTF is a newer process that prints onto a special film, which is then transferred to the target surface using a laminator. It enables printing on curved, irregular, and textured surfaces that cannot be placed on a flatbed printer.
Applications: Branded merchandise, product customisation, equipment branding, promotional items
Surfaces: Glass, metal, wood, plastic, ceramic, leather — almost any surface
Specifying Print Jobs for UAE Conditions
Dubai's climate imposes specific requirements on printed signage:
UV Resistance
Standard inks fade rapidly under UAE UV intensity. Always specify:
- UV-stable inks for any outdoor application
- UV overlaminate for vinyl graphics (adds 2–5 years to outdoor lifespan)
- UV-cured inks (UV flatbed printing) for rigid outdoor signs
Heat Resistance
Summer temperatures in Dubai regularly exceed 45°C ambient, with surface temperatures on south-facing signs reaching 70–80°C. Specify:
- Cast vinyl (not calendered) for vehicle wraps and outdoor graphics — cast vinyl is more dimensionally stable at high temperatures
- Solvent or eco-solvent inks for outdoor vinyl — they maintain adhesion better than latex at high temperatures
Sandstorm Resistance
Sandstorms abrade unprotected print surfaces. Specify:
- Hard overlaminate for outdoor graphics in exposed locations
- UV-cured inks on rigid substrates — more abrasion-resistant than vinyl
Common Applications and Cost Guide
| Application | Material | Cost per sqm |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor vinyl banner | PVC banner, solvent print | AED 40–AED 80 |
| Vehicle wrap vinyl | Cast vinyl, eco-solvent | AED 80–AED 150 |
| Wall graphic vinyl | Calendered vinyl, eco-solvent | AED 60–AED 120 |
| ACP fascia sign (UV flatbed) | ACP, UV print | AED 120–AED 250 |
| Acrylic sign (UV flatbed) | Acrylic, UV print | AED 150–AED 350 |
| Exhibition fabric display | Dye-sub fabric | AED 80–AED 160 |
| Floor graphic | Anti-slip vinyl | AED 100–AED 200 |
